Amherst, Wisconsin…. In the heartland of our greenhouse country sits this gem we completed last year. Though it looks like a home attached greenhouse it is actually attached to a large garden shed. This space is set up for both plants and entertaining friends. It has a few features we will leave to the imagination, but one we will share is its full bathroom with shower for the gardener to clean up in after a days work. This custom built garden room, with a charming vestibule entrance, has all 1/4 inch thick plate glass throughout (in a lightly tinted green hue). With both heating and auto venting features it can handle all 4 Wisconsin seasons with ease. One of our favorites.

Chicago, Illinois…. Check out the greenhouse we did last winter for our friends The Roof Crop. This third story rooftop greenhouse is located above their restaurant, coffee shop, retail store, etc. Located near the United Center, The Roof Crop uses this rooftop garden and greenhouse space for year round growing, special events, and learning experiences. TRC was conceived as a project to market farmable green roof systems in 2013 and has since grown into a green roof growing media, landscape, and urban farm company with deep ties to the communities in which they work.

About the greenhouse:
Our greenhouse was a uniquely designed gutter connected set of garden rooms. Complete with a black frame, a combination of polycarbonate and glass, roof and side vents, and internal fans. Also designed to withstand Chicago skyline winds of 120 mph. We also installed a matching skylight that looks down into the 2nd floor teaching kitchen. Boothbay, Maine…. Here’s a gem we completed last week. People often ask how our knee-walls are completed with a stone face. Here you can see the stone mason mortaring on a flat field stone to a poured concrete wall. This veneer finish gives the building a warmer feel that can also complement the property overall. The knee-wall itself keeps the glass and greenhouse protected from multiple things including landscape mishaps (rocks, etc), rodents & bugs, and snow build up in winter. This project also used a large stone cap on the wall to give it a final touch. If you do a knee-wall hopefully you can find a craftsman like 75 year old John who is very meticulous about his craft.

Evanston Illinois completed summer 2024 by WGC…. This inviting greenhouse is perfectly set in a suburban backyard, near the family pool, and next to the garden shed. Only 10ft x 10ft in size it still packs a punch for available growing space. Inside it is filled with salad greens, herbs, and more. Designed on a short kneewall, with a black frame, all double glass glazing, beauty covers, and a commercial door, this little gem shines. Chanhassen, MN… WGC Project completed June 2024. This luxury chicken coop-greenhouse combination has it all. Space for indoor gardening, exterior raised beds, an air conditioned indoor chicken coop, caged exterior for them to walk around, and a fruit tree orchard. The food production here is plentiful. The greenhouse is perfectly set between two traditional construction walls. Though simple in concept, this is one of the more complex builds we run into. All measurements need to be nearly perfect to achieve. This beauty has a black frame, double glass low-e glazing, electric roof and side vents, & smart box control system. A real northern garden dream.

Manitoba Canada & North Dakota USA…. Completed commercial project. This greenhouse for the International Peace Garden that we completed in 2023 on the border of US/Canada came out just right. With a designed footprint of 200ft x 70ft, we set a glazing system on a specially designed wood frame. They are using it for a special donors collection of cactus plants (quite the collection we might add). Complete with fivewall polycarbonate, heaters, big ass fans, and auto vents it functions well. Today it was 25 degrees outside and 75 degrees inside with minimal to no heat needed. It is open to the public this summer. We recommend the visit if driving by.

La Grange, Illinois…. Here’s a cool project we just completed for a retirement facility in the Chicago suburbs. This 15ft x 25ft Cape Cod greenhouse was designed with double glass Low-e glazing, decorative cresting and beauty cap, dark bronze framing, and a commercial storefront door with sidelights. Also, you will notice the glass walkway we added so the gardeners can walk to the greenhouse in inclement weather without getting wet. It finished off the courtyard perfectly. The seperate potting shed gives the user a room for storage, washroom, garden tools, etc. This beauty with a black frame has single glass (1/8 inch), upgraded door, gas heater and a gravel floor for quick drainage. As of this week, the owner was preparing for spring seed starting. A real gem!

Farm property save! We completed a unique project last year. The client had an old foundation that he wanted to turn into something useful. So we came out and looked at what he had, took some measurements and designed a custom greenhouse that would fit on top of it. With a little TLC to the old walls, we custom built a frame to fit perfectly on it. And now he has a functional space for growing plants in his reclaimed space. This beauty is designed with double glass, green frame, custom placed doors, jogged walls, and plenty of auto-vents. It came out perfectly.

All afternoon his tractor pulls a flat wagon with bales to the barn, then back to the waiting chopped field.
It trails a feather of smoke.
Down the block we bend with the season:
shoes to polish for a big game,
storm windows to batten or patch.
And how like a field is the whole sky now that the maples have shed their leaves, too.
It makes us believers—stationed in groups, leaning on rakes, looking into space. We rub blisters
over billows of leaf smoke.
Or stand alone, bagging gold for the cold days to come.

The Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan…. This stunner is as breathtaking as the entire island it rests on. We completed this design-build in the Summer of 2022. The project was magical in its undertaking. We had to boat the greenhouse material out into the Great Lakes and haul it by horse and trailer up to “The Hotel”. Now, the greenhouse sits down the hill from the “Worlds Largest Porch” and right near the edge of the “Secret Garden”. Designed in Emerald Green, it is built for the snowy northern climate it’s in at 70 pounds per square foot snow loads, 120 mph winds, and double glass for energy efficiency. This is a must see got garden lovers.

Home attached greenhouses are a very common request for us. They give you a garden space that is very easy to use in all four seasons. They work well for plants, a breakfast room, an indoor/outdoor entertainment area, etc. A greenhouse is considered a wet environment, and it is important to treat the connection point to the existing home properly (protecting the watertight building envelope). Designed with 6mm (1/4 inch) thick glass, the building is perfectly designed for the heavy snow loads of Northern Lower Michigan.
